We are pleased to have as our speaker, Yuko Taniguchi, the author of the critically acclaimed book of poetry, “Foreign Wife Elegy”. In 2007 she published her first novel, “The Ocean in the Closet”.
Yuko was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1975. At the age of 15, she came to the United States and attended high school in Maryland. She obtained her collegiate degrees in Minnesota. Yuko now lives in Rochester and is on the faculty of UMR teaching a Writing Studio course and directing the Writing Center to assist students and writing needs. She is also involved in the Creative Renewal Series co-sponsored by the Center for Humanities in Medicine and Cancer Education Center at Mayo Foundation House. Yuko conducts creative writing workshops for the staff, medical specialists, patients, and their families.
In her presentation she will share samples from her poetry and writings on how this program can “witness first-hand the importance of language and its power to express, communicate, and heal”. Also in her presentation, Taniguchi will discuss the recent tsunami in Japan and how writing became a tool to communicate and heal. We look forward to hearing from this very talented author and instructor.
