Celebrating AAUW

Maryette sent me the words to one of the songs written by the Stairwells for our May meeting:

We’re celebrating A A U W (to the tune of Seventy-six Trombones)
It’s made education a priority,
The support and encouragement
For women shown throughout the years
Has helped them make the most of their degrees.

Eighteen eighty one, was the year that it all began
And in eighty-two it really gathered steam
Marion Talbot led the charge to give women a voice
Ultimately, she realized her dream

Op’ning doors for girls and women ’round the world
Breaking through barriers of gender, race and creed,
Promoting lifelong education, equity
Diversity, helping all girls succeed

Providing necessary funds to pave the way
For civil rights, health care and reforming policy,
Fostering empowerment
Philanthropy and good intent,
All make for a fine society

We’re celebrating A A U W
It’s made education a priority,
The support and encouragement
For women shown throughout the years
Has helped them make the most of their degrees.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to combat sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace.  The LAF committee met and decided to give $10,000 to each of the 4 continuing LAF-supported cases!  The Rochester MN branch of AAUW raises money for LAF using “coins for canisters”, our November silent auction, and our May book sale.  http://www.aauw.org/act/laf/index.cfm

Today is the 47th anniversary of the signing of the Equal Pay Act into law by President John F. Kennedy.

AAUW has been leading a nationwide campaign to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act and urges the Senate to take action on the bill before the August recess. “Empowering women is one investment that always pays long-term dividends, no…t only for the women themselves, but also for their families and the nation as well,” said AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman. “It’s time the Equal Pay Act lives up to its promise to provide equal pay for equal work.”
