Getting Girls Sports on Track – Title IX turns 40 years old

Our guest speaker is Diane Ilstrup, who began her long career in the Rochester School District in 1970 at Mayo High School as a physical education teacher.  She was head coach of several of the first Spartans’ girls sports teams in the early 1970s, including volleyball, synchronized swimming and softball.  Title IX officially mandated equal opportunities in sports in 1972, but the road to girls’ sports in Minnesota was being paved years earlier.
When Diane began teaching in 1970. she got in on the ground floor of the explosion of interests in girls’ sports.  It should be fun to hear Diane recall some of the highlights from this interesting and important time in the evolution of girls’ sports.

Vangie Castro: Stand Up! Speak Out! Bullying Prevention and Intervention

AAUW’s research “Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School” and other reports have established that sexual harassment and bullying are pervasive, national problems.

Our luncheon speaker will be Vangie Castro.  Born in the Philippines, Vangie Castro emigrated to the United States with her family at age 3 and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area.  She studied political science at the California State University, East Bay, and currently works at the Diversity Council as the Youth Education Program Manager.  She is a member of Governor Dayton’s Task Force on the Prevention of School Bullying and has worked to educate the community on social justice, diversity, and inclusion.

We will be inviting  the AAUW-Rochester science fair winners and also will be announcing the names of our members who are being honored this year by having our AAUW Funds contributions made in their names.

Our menu will be:

– Tossed green salad

– Chicken served with herb roasted potatoes and vegetable

– Chocolate brownie sundae

Our guest speakers will be Don and Stephanie Vaughn of Mantorville, who have been registered handlers with Therapy Dogs, inc. for 10 years.  Don teaches Therapy Preparation classes at Leashes and Leads and is a Test Observer for qualifying therapy dogs.  Don and Stephanie volunteer their time at Ronald McDonald House and other care facilities providing a beneficial service of comfort care to people of all ages.  Their three-year-old registered therapy dog, Gaag, will also be a featured guest.  Please join us and be prepared to be informed and entertained.

Our guest speakers will be Chad Ramaker, site director, and Ray Dunfee, case manager for Silver Creek Corner, a residence for chronic alcoholics.  Supportive housing for homeless, chronic alcoholics is projected to save costs in medical treatment, detox services and law enforcement.  Although at first controversial, results from Silver Creek Corner and other similar facilities speak for themselves.  Please join us for an informative and interesting update on the progress of Silver Creek Corner.

Reservations are not required for breakfast.  Parking is available in the Double Tree Ramp with skyway access across Broadway or the 2nd Street SW ramp on 3rd Street and 1st Avenue. Enter Hilton from West door or use on-street parking.

Betty Smith, Shirley Greising and Dawn Littleton, co-founders of the Celebrate Dakota! Diversity Networking Group at Mayo Clinic, will give a presentation on the Dakota Heritage and Lifestyle.  They were honored with a community education and advocacy award from the Rochester Heritage Presentation Committee in May 2012 for founding the diversity networking group.

It has been 4 years since we met at UMR and heard Chancellor Lehmkuhle speak about the plans for UMR and its integrated campus.

This time we have an opportunity to have a behind the scenes tour to see the classrooms and labs.  We will hear about the unique and innovative initiatives at UMR 2012.  Following the tour Chancellor Lehmkuhle will discuss the progress of UMR in the past 4 years and what is planned for the future.  We will also have time for Q & A.  Please join us for a special presentation.

Alicia Jacobsen, our speaker and recipient of a 2010-2011 career development grant, is pursuing licensure in school counseling.  She will increase her impact on middle school students as she expands her role in the public school setting.  We will also learn about an AAUW community action grant used to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) tutors at St. Catherine University.

AAUW is providing more than $3.7 million in funding for more than 240 fellowships and grants to outstanding women and nonprofit organizations in the 2011-2012 year.

We will be inviting AAUW-Rochester Science Fair winners and also will be announcing the names of our members who are being honored this year by having our AAUW Funds contributions made in their names.

Living a Life that is Free of Discrimination and Harassment: It is your right in Minnesota

Our guest speaker is Nora Dooley, PhD, Chair of the Olmsted County Human Rights Commission.  She is originally from Montreal Canada.  Nora received her BS degree in BioChemistry and her masters and PhD from the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University.  She joined the commission 2 years ago.  The Olmsted County Human Rights Commission was established in 1998, in an effort to provide an opportunity for resolution of human rights matters through means other than the courts.   The 13 members of the Commission are appointed by the County Board.  Please join us to learn about the duties and outcomes of the Human Rights Commission and have your rights protected.

What are the challenges facing the Rochester Public Schools?

What a great opportunity we have to meet and hear the new superintendent of the Rochester Public Schools, Mr. Michael Munoz.  He began his position in July 2011.  Before coming to Rochester, he was the Chief Academic Officer of Des Moines Public Schools, a diverse district of 32,000 students.  Mr. Munoz’s other work experiences include classroom teaching, elementary and secondary school counselor, and principal at the elementary and middle school  levels.  He has had a 33 year career in education.

Board members and supervisors describe him as an advocate of high achievement for all, as an excellent communicator, and as a visionary leader.  Mr. Munoz is glad to see that the Rochester Public Schools continues its mission of “Lifelong Learning for All”.  He believes that all programs, activities, and events need to focus on helping students learn and achieve.

He will be joined for the brunch by his wife.  Don’t miss the chance to meet our new superintendent and his wife.
