<p>Getting Girls Sports on Track &#8211; Title IX turns 40 years old</p>
<p>Our guest speaker is Diane Ilstrup, who began her long career in the Rochester School District in 1970 at Mayo High School as a physical education teacher.  She was head coach of several of the first Spartans&#8217; girls sports teams in the early 1970s, including volleyball, synchronized swimming and softball.  Title IX officially mandated equal opportunities in sports in 1972, but the road to girls&#8217; sports in Minnesota was being paved years earlier.<br />
When Diane began teaching in 1970. she got in on the ground floor of the explosion of interests in girls&#8217; sports.  It should be fun to hear Diane recall some of the highlights from this interesting and important time in the evolution of girls&#8217; sports.</p>

<p>AAUW&#8217;s research &#8220;Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School&#8221; and other reports have established that sexual harassment and bullying are pervasive, national problems.</p>
<p>Our luncheon speaker will be Vangie Castro.  Born in the Philippines, Vangie Castro emigrated to the United States with her family at age 3 and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area.  She studied political science at the California State University, East Bay, and currently works at the Diversity Council as the Youth Education Program Manager.  She is a member of Governor Dayton&#8217;s Task Force on the Prevention of School Bullying and has worked to educate the community on social justice, diversity, and inclusion.</p>
<p>We will be inviting  the AAUW-Rochester science fair winners and also will be announcing the names of our members who are being honored this year by having our AAUW Funds contributions made in their names.</p>
<p>Our menu will be:</p>

<p>&#8211; Chicken served with herb roasted potatoes and vegetable</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Alicia Jacobsen, our speaker and recipient of a 2010-2011 career development grant, is pursuing licensure in school counseling.  She will increase her impact on middle school students as she expands her role in the public school setting.  We will also learn about an AAUW community action grant used to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) tutors at St. Catherine University.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">AAUW is providing more than $3.7 million in funding for more than 240 fellowships and grants to outstanding women and nonprofit organizations in the 2011-2012 year.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">We will be inviting AAUW-Rochester Science Fair winners and also will be announcing the names of our members who are being honored this year by having our AAUW Funds contributions made in their names.</p>

<p>Our guest speaker is Nora Dooley, PhD, Chair of the Olmsted County Human Rights Commission.  She is originally from Montreal Canada.  Nora received her BS degree in BioChemistry and her masters and PhD from the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University.  She joined the commission 2 years ago.  The Olmsted County Human Rights Commission was established in 1998, in an effort to provide an opportunity for resolution of human rights matters through means other than the courts.   The 13 members of the Commission are appointed by the County Board.  Please join us to learn about the duties and outcomes of the Human Rights Commission and have your rights protected.</p>

<p>What a great opportunity we have to meet and hear the new superintendent of the Rochester Public Schools, Mr. Michael Munoz.  He began his position in July 2011.  Before coming to Rochester, he was the Chief Academic Officer of Des Moines Public Schools, a diverse district of 32,000 students.  Mr. Munoz&#8217;s other work experiences include classroom teaching, elementary and secondary school counselor, and principal at the elementary and middle school  levels.  He has had a 33 year career in education.</p>
<p>Board members and supervisors describe him as an advocate of high achievement for all, as an excellent communicator, and as a visionary leader.  Mr. Munoz is glad to see that the Rochester Public Schools continues its mission of &#8220;Lifelong Learning for All&#8221;.  He believes that all programs, activities, and events need to focus on helping students learn and achieve.</p>
<p>He will be joined for the brunch by his wife.  Don&#8217;t miss the chance to meet our new superintendent and his wife.</p>
